COMMON STATE, POTENTIAL CONVERSATION [1] by Eyal Sivan

DOCUMENTARY | 2012 | 123 MN | COLOR | 16:9 | o.v ARABIC & HEBREW | st ENGLISH

A common State in the sense of two national communities intermingling on a same land; one forming the majority, the other a minority; their respective citizenship is defined at best with vagueness, at worst with inequality.

In his new film Eyal Sivan discusses with prominent Palestinian and Israeli scholars activists and thinkers working on the idea of a common State.
The film stages a virtual conversation between Arab-Palestinians and Jewish-Israelis, all “children of the country” – politicians and settlers, lawyers and artists, old and young, Sephardic and Ashkenazi Israeli Jews, Palestinian Arabs in Israel and the occupied territories and in the diaspora.

  • The deadlock in the Peace Process in Palestine/Israel and the deterioration of the situation since Oslo have provoked the revival/resurgence of an intellectual debate about the question of a 'one state solution' in Palestine. This in turn has fostered a tremendous academic, literary and artistic work dynamic drawing up the report of an already existing “common state” paradigm.
